The Parish of St Andrew & St Mark, Surbiton
Our Faith: Charities

Charities

Charity and Love

Our parish supports and is actively involved with a number of charities, through one-off fundraising events, regular times of dedicated giving (i.e. during Lent) and due to member's personal involvement in local and international charities.

The Friday Coffee Club

This Club donates its profits to different charities each year.

During the past year they have been able to donate a total of £500.00 to:

  • Christian Aid
  • Christmas Day lunch at the YMCA
  • Disabled Children in Bethlehem
  • Fiddlers Green Surbiton
  • Fircroft Centre, Surbiton
  • Kingston Churches Action on the Homeless

ABCD (Action around Bethlehem Children with Disability)

Our previous Vicar, John Tidy, became one of the trustees of this charity during his time as Dean of St George's Cathedral, Jerusalem. ABCD has close links with the Leonard Cheshire Foundation in the UK.

BISHOP'S LENT CALL

The Bishop's Lent appeal is on behalf of a different selection of charities each year. In 2011 the Appeal is for our Link Dioceses' in Zimbabwe.

THE CHILDREN'S SOCIETY

We have a very popular Christingle Service on Christmas Eve, where a collection is taken for The Children's Society.

CHRISTIAN AID

We have a house-to-house collection for Christian Aid Week, and sometimes use its work as a Harvest theme.

FIDDLER'S GREEN

This is a small residential care home for people with physical disabilities, particularly for those arising from cerebral palsy. The home is owned by the Ability Housing Association, and is run by a volunteer management committee. The residents' fees are paid by a placement authority, but if not all the resident places are taken up there is a shortfall in the money available for staff wages and so on. The home has seven bedrooms, and is located off Ewell Road.

FIRCROFT TRUST (Formerly Mental Aid Projects or MAP)

This organisation works to enable adults with mental health problems and learning disabilities to lead independent lives. They also have a charity shop on St Andrew's Road. Our recent pantomime production was in aid of the Fircroft Trust.

KINGSTON CHURCHES ACTION ON HOMELESSNESS (KCAH)

KCAH is a registered charity set up by 55 churches in the Borough of Kingston upon Thames. It aims to relieve the distress of homeless and potentially homeless people by the provision of service and resources. KCAH promotes the public awareness of housing services and needs.

UNITED SOCIETY FOR THE PROPAGATION OF THE GOSPEL

USPG enables people to grow spiritually, to thrive physically and to have a voice in an unjust world. As an Anglican mission agency, the USPG does this alongside churches and communities around the world, providing the resources - people, money and ideas - that they define as necessary to meet local needs.
