Confirmation for children occurs when they are ready to speak for themselves to confirm their commitment to God, the Christian faith and to His Church. This is usually any time from about 10 years of age and previous baptism is a requirement.
Confirmation for adults may happen when the adult wishes to confirm and make public their commitment to God and the Christian Church. If the adult has not been baptised, Baptism will occur immediately before Confirmation.
For adults and children Confirmation involves some kind of instruction, usually with your parish priest in a group setting.
Only the Bishop can confirm people, and therefore usually once or twice a year the Bishop will hold Confirmation services to which you would be invited to attend. On the Eve of Easter Confirmations also always take place at Southwark Cathedral.
Once a child or adult has been baptised they are a full member of the Church and therefore are able to receive communion (the bread and the wine). However, modern practice now permits children to be admitted to Communion prior to Confirmation. Admission to Communion classes are held every year: if your child would like to attend a class please speak to a member of the clergy.
