THE ORGAN IN ST MARK'S CHURCH
The organ in the present church was originally built in 1872 by Halmshaw & Sons of Birmingham for the private home of Mr S.W. Pilling. It was subsequently rebuilt by Brindley and Foster in 1883, Walker in 1920, and Mander in 1950, remaining as a privately owned instrument until the late 1950s when it was sold to Mander. They rebuilt and installed it in the newly rebuilt St Mark's in 1960.
Placed in a chamber in the south of the church, the organ has three manuals with a small 'West End' section playable from the Great or Choir manuals. There are sixty-three speaking stops and nine couplers. The Swell reeds are fashioned on those in the organ at St John's, Waterloo (the Festival of Britain Church), the large open diapason on the Great comes from St Barnabas, South Lambeth and the Choir gamba and tuba are by Walker.
